Scholarships
Giving back to our Heber-Overgaard community is a priority for HOCRN (Heber-Overgaard Community Resource Network). Annually, we present four scholarships valued at $2000 each to graduating seniors from Mogollon High School.
For many years, Jim Cherry and his wife operated the HOST Thrift Store in our community. Sadly, Jim passed away during the COVID pandemic, and the thrift store was later reborn as HOCRN Thrift. As the thrift operation transitioned from HOST to HOCRN Thrift, one of the requests made was to continue honoring Jim’s memory by providing annual scholarships in his name. Today, those scholarships continue to support local students pursuing their educational dreams.
June “Sassy” Call, co-founder and President of HOCRN, has dedicated countless volunteer hours to strengthening and supporting the Heber-Overgaard community and remains deeply committed to encouraging youth volunteerism and community involvement. We offer the June ”Sassy” Call Scholarship.
Fire Chief William D. McCluskey proudly served the Heber-Overgaard community from 2017 to 2023. Chief McCluskey was a co-founder of HOCRN and a beloved community leader. Following Chief’s passing last year, his close friend, Fire Chief Jason Payne, has continued the tradition of helping select a scholarship recipient pursuing a field and path that reflects values important to Chief McCluskey.
As a 100% volunteer-powered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, HOCRN places a strong emphasis on recognizing scholarship candidates who have volunteered, served others, and given back to their community. HOCRN believes volunteerism helps build stronger communities while developing future leaders with compassion, integrity, and a heart for service.
For the Fire Chief William D. McCluskey scholarship, we do open the scholarship to past graduates of MHS. We are specifically looking for candidates eager to pursue fire science, emergency medical training, forestry, and related studies.
2026 Scholarship Recipients
This year, HOCRN is honored to award eight scholarships to deserving students from our community, including seven graduating seniors from Mogollon High School and one local homeschool graduate. Through the generosity of donors, community supporters, and fundraising efforts, HOCRN is able to continue investing in the future of our youth and recognizing students who have demonstrated hard work, leadership, volunteerism, and dedication to their community.
- Three HOCRN Scholarships, each valued at $2,000, were awarded to Lyla Crandell, Jasmin Fox, and Jordynn Crandell.
- Three James “Jim” Cherry Memorial Scholarship awards, each valued at $1,000, were presented to Cashlynn Hall, Landie Crum, and Giovanni Fabian.
- The Fire Chief William D. McCluskey Memorial Scholarship, valued at $2,000, was awarded to Caleb Burton.

2025 Scholarship Recipients
Congratulations to all the Mogollon High School graduating seniors! This year, 2025, the Heber-Overgaard Community Resource Network (HOCRN) received a total of 13 scholarship applications from exceptional students. The dedication, effort, and enthusiasm displayed by these young adults made the selection process both inspiring and challenging.
A big thank you goes out to the parents, friends, school staff, and the entire community for supporting these scholarship candidates. Because of the high caliber of applications received, HOCRN decided to award two additional scholarships this year. HOCRN Scholarships support local students pursuing certification programs, trade/technical schools, community colleges, colleges, and universities. This year’s recipients truly exemplify the spirit of service, hard work, and community involvement that HOCRN values.
